- What is E'MAIL
- --------------
- Email is a utility for point mail operators. FidoNet point mail is an
- automated means for reading and replying to echo mail without having to use the
- BBS software. Instead you deal with your host's mailer software directly.
- AceComm provides all the built in functions for interfacing to EMSI compliant
- mailers. EMAIL.EXE provides the services required to establish an off line
- echo mail message base.
-
- EMAIL setup area is completely menu driven.
-
- EMAIL provides the following functions.
- - Message reader / editor
- - Mail bundle unpack and tosser
- - Mail export (pack up messages originating from your system for delivery to
- your HOST)
- - Message base maintenance, Renumbering, Message deleting (pruning)
- - Area maintenance, EMAIL provides a menu interface for setting up echo mail
- areas.
-
-
- How to Install EMAIL
- --------------------
-
- - If you have an AREAS.BBS config file
- Copy AREAS.BBS into the same directory. EMAIL.EXE will initialize it's PRM
- file with all the AREAS.BBS info. If you don't have an AREAS.BBS you can enter
- the information from the menus.
-
- - If you don't have an AREAS.BBS file
- EMAIL.EXE will self install
-
-
- Using E'Mail Functions from DOS Prompt
- --------------------------------------
- EMAIL is menu driven, it is also callable from the command line. TYPE
- EMAIL /? for command line parameters
-
-
- NETMAIL / ECHO MAIL
- -------------------
- EMAIL.EXE expects the first message area to be NETMAIL area. EMAIL will force
- this area when installing. NETMAIL area is different than echo mail in that
- NETMAIL is a person-to-person mail area. Private messages are allowed and sent
- directly to the addressee, or routed through your host. NETMAIL is electronic
- mail that does not travel in public message areas(echo mail forums). The first
- message area in EMAIL must be NETMAIL area. All others are considered ECHO
- mail. ECHO mail areas are public forums. Mail in ECHO mail areas is seen by
- all readers of that particular forum. There is no provision for private mail
- in ECHO mail forums. Some message editors will allow you to create messages
- with PRIVATE message attributes in echo mail forums. Don't be fooled. Your
- echo mail message is distributed for all the world to see. Use NETMAIL for
- private mail.
-
-
- What is a POINT
- ---------------
- POINT mail operators are sub-nodes of FIDONET NODE operators. Your local
- FIDONET SysOp has the capability for hooking up users to echo mail with an
- automated mailer interface. POINT mail services will allow the message areas
- to be arced into mail bundles, and distributed to each POINT by means of
- automated mail sessions. Automated mail sessions require a special protocol
- interface for negotiating a mail session. AceComm supports the EMSI
- (Electronic Mailer Standard Interface) for it's mailer services. As a POINT
- node, you can receive your Echo mail and Netmail in as much time as it takes to
- connect and download the mail bundle with Zmodem or an 8k version dubbed
- ZedZap. AceComm supports 8k ZedZap. The ACECOMM.DOC file contains a chapter
- outlining AceComm's Point Mailer Services. AceComm supports both automated
- and manual mailer services.
-
- EMSI is not IEMSI
- Note: EMSI is different from IEMSI (Interactive Electronic Mailer Standard
- Interface) IEMSI is for human (BBS) callers and is a standard for
- automating BBS sessions. Primarily used for auto log in, IEMSI is capable
- of much more than auto log in, including checking for new mail, files, and
- establishing session configurations.
-
-
- Establishing Yourself as a Point
- --------------------------------
- As a POINT, you will be a sub-node off your host. A system operator who
- carries FIDONET echo mail can carry points. You will need to contact your
- local FidoNet SysOp and inform them you are interested in operating as a mail
- point. Not all SysOps will be able to carry you as a point. It will take an
- experienced SySop familiar with carrying points. Point mail is an increasingly
- popular means for reading off line mail. Your POINT setup will allow you to
- download mail with absolute minimum on line time. Any outgoing mail will be
- sent the same way quickly and without having to log onto the BBS. There is a
- learning curve. FidoNet carries a "Points" message forum which topic is POINT
- setups. The ACECOMM.DOC file contains a chapter for "Point Mail", a "Mailer
- Interface" menu area, and related chapter "Event Scheduler" menu. AceComm will
- allow manual operation, or automated calls to your Host while you sleep, or are
- doing something else. The point of becoming a POINT is to save time, be able
- to read and write messages off line, at your leisure, with as much automation
- as possible.
-
-
-
- E'MAIL Updates
- -------------
- EMAIL.EXE will be updated almost weekly for the next few months. The EMAIL
- code is being implemented into the Windows version package. Plans for
- either Squish or JAM message base support are the next step for E'Mail.
- The latest code for EMAIL will be available on The AceComm support BBS.
